Functions & Goals

The New Zealand Committee (NZC) of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists is not only responsible for activities similar to those of the Australian Regional Committees but also represents the College in dealing with national agencies such as the Ministry of Health and the Medical Council. In this respect some of its functions mirror those of the College Council in Melbourne.

In all of its activities the Committee’s guiding principle remains the College’s mission statement: “To serve the community by fostering safety and quality patient care in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine”. Because the community served by NZC is the New Zealand public on occasion College policy has to be interpreted to best meet the unique needs of New Zealand. For the most part however the aims of the NZC are identical to those of the College in Australia.

There are four major areas in which the NZC pursues it goals:

  1. Promotion of College’s policies setting standards for practice in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine the aims of which are to offer the public care of a standard equal to that anywhere in the world.
  2. Training is supported through the establishment of teaching programs in hospitals throughout New Zealand. The hospitals are regularly inspected to ensure their facilities and staff are able to provide safe, comprehensive, clinical experience and theoretical teaching. On behalf of the NZC some centres run pre-exam courses for the primary and final examinations. In addition, the NZC contributes advice and teaching to the training program for anaesthesia assistants.
  3. Continuing medical education is provided for all practitioners with the principle aim of maintaining specialist skills. Most of these activities are coordinated by CECANZ, an educational initiative supported equally by the NZC and the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists. Through its Maintenance of Professional Standards Program (MOPS) ANZCA encourages involvement in CME and audit.
  4. In advising national agencies NZC attempts to ensure that in a multitude of ways quality anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine are safely provided to the public.
